What To Do When A Recruiter Reaches Out

Congrats! A recruiter reached out to you! Clearly, your resume, reputation, or LinkedIn profile spoke to them. Whether you are searching for a job or not, it’s nice to know your skills were recognized.

Now you’ve read the message (or listened to the voicemail) from the recruiter, you have 4 important steps to take.

  1. Consider your situation. Are you looking? Are you not looking? Were you not planning to look unless a great opportunity fell into your lap? Could it be worth a conversation to learn more?
  2. Do some research. Not all recruiters are created equal and you want to make sure you’re working with a quality firm. Kind of like ours 🙂
  3. Respond. Be timely and honest about where you stand and what you’re hoping to do. We certainly don’t want to waste your time or ours if you aren’t looking or you don’t feel this is the right fit for you.
  4. Keep in touch. The job market is always changing. You never know when you might want to speak to the recruiter about opportunities.
